Film
At the International House (3701 Chestnut St.) go watch In Vanda's Room at 7pm by Pedro Costa. Mr. Costa is acclaimed for using his ascetic style to depict marginalised people in desperate living situations. Like In Vanda's Room, many of his films are set in a district of Lisbon inhabited by the socially disadvantaged and shot in a natural and low-key way that makes them resemble documentaries. Mr. Costa has been inspiring festival goers across the world for years but an almost unknown in the United States where screenings have been few and far between. In Vanda's Room, is the extraordinary portrait of Vanda, a young drug user from Fontainhas, the Cape Verdien quarter of Lisbon. For more information vist
